SCDES Announces Public Meeting to Introduce Draft Lower Savannah-Salkehatchie River Basin Plan

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) is holding a public meeting to introduce the draft Lower Savannah-Salkehatchie River Basin Plan to the basin’s stakeholders.
The meeting will take place:
5:30 p.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 22

The draft plan was developed over a two-year period by the Lower Savannah-Salkehatchie River Basin Council, a working group of stakeholders with water interests in the basin, under the guidance of the South Carolina State Water Planning Framework published in 2019. The plan is the sixth of eight River Basin Plans scheduled to be completed over the next year for each of the eight planning basins in the state.
The draft Lower Savannah-Salkehatchie River Basin Plan includes an assessment of current and future water availability in the basin and documents water management strategies that can help ensure water is available for all future uses in the basin for the next 50 years. The draft Lower Savannah-Salkehatchie River Basin Plan is available for review and download on the SCDES Hydrology website at des.sc.gov/LSSRiverBasinPlanning.
The public meeting will serve as a venue for presenting the draft plan to the basin’s stakeholders and for soliciting public comments on the plan. Public comments will be accepted from July 22-August 22, 2025, with submission instructions found at the website noted above. Public involvement is critical to the goal of ensuring that future generations of South Carolinians have secure, well-managed supplies of our most critical natural resource: water. Attendees are also encouraged to arrive early to meet River Basin Council members, enjoy some light refreshments including local watermelon, and sample drinking water from various sources in the basin beginning at 5:30 p.m.
