Lead Testing in Schools and Child Care Programs Drinking Water Grant

Our agency has completed the lead testing program for drinking water in schools and childcare facilities, which was funded through a federal grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). For the past several years, this grant allowed the Department to offer sampling and laboratory analysis at no cost to participating locations. With the conclusion of the grant period, we are no longer able to provide free testing services and therefore are no longer accepting new applications.

We remain committed to supporting safe drinking water in South Carolina’s educational and childcare environments. Facilities that wish to pursue lead testing independently can find guidance, best practices, and additional resources through the EPA and other accredited laboratories. If you have questions about previously submitted applications or completed testing, please contact Caleb Snelling (caleb.snelling@des.sc.gov or 803.898.4432) for assistance.

Sample Results

The EPA has determined the program remediation level for lead in drinking water samples is 0.015 milligrams per liter (mg/L), or 15 parts per billion (ppb). When a lead sample is detected at or above this level, we encourage schools and facilities to take immediate steps to address the source of lead to protect children and staff. This may include flushing efforts, closing of water outlets, replacement water filling stations, etc.

Sample results will remain available on the WIIN Grant Web Map . To search for your facility, utilize the search bar on the top left of the page. Note: searching by street address is recommended.
