Recreational Water Watch for Lake Hartwell

May 27 Update: Recreational Water Watch for Lake Hartwell Remains in Effect.

SCDES continues to monitor the event and record reports of observations. Following Memorial Day weekend, we have received multiple reports of harmful algal bloom (HAB) sightings on the South Carolina and Georgia sides of the lake. These sightings are recorded on the agency’s Algal Bloom Monitoring Map. Recommendations remain the same: (1) avoid contact in areas where the HAB is present and (2) keep pets and animals from swimming in or drinking lake water where the HAB is observed.

Most sightings and agency observations of the HAB have been in coves and along the shore. The bloom has tended to appear light green or light blue in color, with potential yellow or green streaks.

A new era in environmental protection.
